We are pleased to announce the upcoming opening of our new exhibition space: L21 HOME. Located in the centre of Palma de Mallorca, it will be dedicated exclusively to curatorial and research-based projects.
This project follows the experimental and bold line of our former exhibition space L21 LAB in Son Castelló, expanding the available space and installation possibilities. The exhibitions will establish dialogues between artists from different contexts and generations, either those represented by the gallery or national and international collaborating artist relevant to the L21 programme. Our aim is to present thoughtful, yet daring installations, to keep pushing the limits of the display.
L21 HOME is the fourth space of the L21 gallery, joining the galleries L21 PALMA and L21 BARCELONA, and the production and project space L21 RESIDENCY. The renovation of this large three-storey building has been designed to generate multiple readings that allow the for heterogeneous times to coexist and be simultaneously perceived. The renovation has also sought to take distance from the white cube aesthetic, revealing various layers and textures, debris and sediments, the result of the different purposes this historic building has had over decades.
Based in the centre of Palma, where L21 Gallery was founded more than ten years ago, the space is located just a few steps from the historic Sóller train station, still active nowadays. A fortuitous circumstance which is, in a way, symbolic. Because L21 HOME is a new adventure that well represents the movement and constant reinvention that are in L21’s DNA. A constantly evolving project.
The first exhibition of this new space, ENTRE CAJAS, will open on the 28th April 2023. To celebrate this new chapter, the spotlight will be on all the artists we are pleased to represent, showing all 27 in a single project with new works, most of all produced specifically for this project.
This first exhibition is our statement and shows who we are, offering a tour that articulates an ambitious dialogue between architecture and works. The different atmospheres of each room seek to distance themselves from the pretended neutrality of the white cube and to generate an involving experience for the public.
L21’s aim has always been to work the exhibition space to suit the artist’s different languages and not the other way around, as is commonly the case. The opening of L21 HOME is a step further in this direction. Its renovation has been conceived and carried out to serve as a stage for the works of the artists in its programme, considering their research as the starting point, and creating the best possible context to present and promote them in a sophisticated, sincere, and inclusive manner.
The title ENTRE CAJAS alludes to the stage of change and movement, of relocation and renovation in which we find ourselves, when everything is still to be done and one can feel the excitement of a new project about to be launched. “Entre Cajas” is also a Spanish expression borrowed from theatre, meaning “backstage” or “behind the scenes”. The title refers to everything that happens internally in a project before going on stage, in the space out of public view. On April 28th we are opening our backstage, to share with you all the work in which the gallery and the artists have been immersed for the last months. We open the doors of our home, and we invite you all to celebrate this new chapter with us!
